gnu_screen

GNU/Screen

Screen is a terminal multiplexer, ie, with screen you can have multiple virtual TTY in one true TTY. Besides, screen allows you session persistence and session sharing.

Usage

Create an anonymous session

 screen

You are now in a brand new Screen where you can do the same thing you would in a any other TTY…

Create a named session

Named session are handy when sharing session with someone

 screen -S sessionName

Once in a screen, you can navigate through your session with CTRL+A

  • Detache a screen
   CTRL+a  CTRL+d 
  • List existing screen
 jackall@fenrir:~$ screen  -ls     
 There are screens on:
        32477.TEST  (detached)
        8695.perso      (detached)

Here I have 2 detached screen…

  • Join an existing Detached screen
    screen -r perso
  • Join an existing Screen (still attached by someone else)
   screen -x perso 
  • Create a new shell in a Screen
    CTRL+a CTRL+C
  • List et navigate between shells
    CTRL+a " 
  • Rename a shell
 CTRL+a A
  • Resize a shell (Full screen)
 CTRL+a F
  • Scroll Back in a screen
 CTRL+a Esc
